History Major requirements
for students declaring the major after Autumn 2002
To complete a History major students must satisfy these minimum requirements:
- 60 credits of history
coursework, with a minimum history GPA of 2.25 and a 2.0 in each history course
(courses below a 2.00 will not be applied toward any requirement for the major,
but will affect the History GPA).
- 30 credits of upper division
history coursework (300-400 level) completed in residence at the University
of Washington. Transfer and AP credit, correspondence courses, and foreign
study courses are not classified as "in residence."
- 5 credits in each of
the following areas of study, drawn from the departmental list of Approved
Courses:
- An approved
5-credit 300-level junior history seminar (HIST 388) completed at the
University of Washington. This course must be taken within two quarters of
declaring the major and must be completed before a student may take the senior
seminar; concurrent enrollment is not permitted.
- An approved
5-credit 400-level history seminar (HIST 494 or 498) completed at the
University of Washington in which a major research paper or its equivalent
will be written. The junior seminar must be completed before the senior seminar
my be taken; concurrent enrollment is not permitted.
- 10 credits of approved
courses in the pre-modern period.
- 10 credits of approved
courses in the modern period.
The choice of elective
coursework is entirely up the the history major, so long as the above requirements
are fulfilled.
