Figure
1. Relationship of Abacavir Hypersensitivity Reaction and MHC Markers

Investigators performed
MHC region typing on the first 200 persons who received abacavir in the Western
Australian HIV cohort Study. Definite abacavir hypersensitivity occurred in 18
patients. Abacavir tolerance was defined by at least 6 weeks of abacavir use
without hypersensitivity symptoms. The graph shows a comparison of the frequency
of specific HLA types among patients with either abacavir hypersensitivity or
abacavir tolerance. This figure is based on data from Mallal S, Nolan D, Will
C, et al. Association between presence of HLA-B*5701, HLA-DR7, and HLA-DQ3 and
hypersensitivity to HIV-1 reverse-transcriptase inhibitor abacavir. Lancet 2002;359:727-32.
