Learning Objectives

Upon completing the module Antiretroviral Rx: Resistance, participants should be able to:

  1. List the circumstances for performing resistance testing according to the DHHS antiretroviral therapy guidelines.
  2. Understand that resistance testing may not be accurate with very low HIV RNA levels and in persons who have discontinued antiretroviral therapy.
  3. Describe the genotypic assays and the meaning of the letter and number notated for individual mutations.
  4. Discuss the principles of the phenotypic assay and what the fold change represents.
  5. Understand the significance of a K103N mutation on a genotype.
  6. Describe the impact of the K103N mutation on virologic fitness.
  7. List the most common genotypic mutations associated with resistance to nelfinavir (Viracept.
  8. Discuss the response to new treatment regimens in patients who experience virologic failure with nelfinavir.
