Figure 1. Treatment of Acute HIV Infection and Subsequent Treatment Interruptions

This figure illustrates the concept of attempting to augment functional immune responses in persons diagnosed with acute HIV infection. With this strategy, patients initiate HAART during acute HIV infection, continue HAART for at least 1 year, and subsequently undergo a series of treatment interruptions and reinitiate HARRT if the HIV RNA levels consistently exceed 5,000 copies/ml. The goal is to eventually maintain immune-based control of HIV in the absence of antiretroviral therapy. The purple boxes represent time on HAART and the orange boxes represent time with no antiretroviral therapy. Figure based on methods from Rosenberg ES, Altfeld M, Poon SH, et al. Immune control of HIV-1 after early treatment of acute infection. Nature. 2000;407:523-6.
