Figure 2. Limited Durability of Immune Control Following Treatment of Acute HIV Infection

Fourteen patients received potent antiretroviral therapy during acute HIV infection and subsequently underwent supervised treatment interruptions. With the treatment interruption, subjects restarted antiretroviral therapy if their HIV RNA level increased above 5,000 copies/ml for longer than 3 consecutive weeks or if it exceeded 50,000 copies on any single occasion. The data shown represent the percentage of patients who maintained virologic control without antiretroviral therapy assessed at different time points after stopping therapy. Data from Kaufmann DE, Lichterfeld M, Altfeld M, et al. Limited durability of viral control following treated acute HIV infection. PLoS Med. 2004;1:e36.
