Figure
4. Kaplan-Meier Estimates of the Time to Viral Suppression after
Initiating Antiretroviral Therapy Related to Base-Line Phenotypic Resistance
Data Obtained During Acute or Early HIV Infection

The IC50 result
was obtained from phenotypic resistance test and represents the concentration
of the antiretroviral drug required to cause 50% inhibition of HIV replication;
these results are compared with the IC50 of a drug-sensitive
reference strain to determine the IC50 ratio. The
graph line with IC50 ratio less than 2.5 represents
patients with drug-susceptible HIV, whereas the graph line with IC50 ratio
greater than 10 represents those patients who had HIV with resistance to at least
one antiretroviral drug. The time from initiation of antiretroviral therapy to
suppression of HIV RNA to less than 500 copies/ml was significantly less in those
subjects who had drug-susceptible HIV at baseline. Results from the resistance
testing were not known when the patients received antiretroviral therapy. Figure
