Upon completing the module Dermatologic
Manifestations, participants should be able to:
- Identify the proper CDC classification for an HIV-infected patient
with a chronic ulcerative herpes simplex lesion present for at
least one month.
- List the appropriate means of diagnosing a herpes simplex lesion.
- Describe the basic mechanism of action of acyclovir (Zovirax).
- Discuss why foscarnet (Foscavir) is typically effective against
acyclovir-resistant herpes simplex virus infections.
- Identify the causative agent for Kaposi’s sarcoma.
- Recognize Kaposi’s sarcoma skin lesions and understand which
organ systems are most likely to be involved with Kaposi’s sarcoma.
- Summarize the appropriate management for an HIV-infected patient
who does not have a known history of varicella or zoster.
- Discuss the appropriate approach for making a laboratory diagnosis
of herpes zoster.
- Describe key clinical features of molluscum contagiosum in HIV-infected
persons with advanced immune suppression.
- List 3 or more treatments for molluscum contagiosum in HIV-infected
patients.
