Learning Objectives
Upon completing the module Drug-Drug Interactions,
participants should be able to:
- Describe the interaction between ritonavir (Norvir)
and sildenafil (Viagra).
- List the potential benefits of pharmacokinetic enhancement with
ritonavir when used with another protease inhibitor.
- Understand the drug-drug interactions that occur with rifamycins
(rifampin and rifabutin) and the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase
inhibitors (NNRTIs).
- Understand the drug-drug interactions that occur with rifamycins
(rifampin and rifabutin) and the protease inhibitors (PIs).
- Summarize the impact of that nevirapine (Viramune)
and efavirenz (Sustiva) have
on methadone (Methadose) levels.
- Understand the interaction between protease inhibitors and methadone
can be highly variable.
- Discuss the predicted impact of nevirapine (Viramune)
and efavirenz (Sustiva) on
oral contraceptive levels.
- Understand the recommendation to avoid using oral contraceptives
as the primary form of birth control in persons taking either a non-nucleoside
reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTIS) or a protease inhibitor.
- Summarize the major interactions between statin drugs and antiretroviral
medications.
- List 2 statin drugs that should be avoided when used in a patient
taking antiretroviral regimen that contains a PI.
