Upon completing the module Initial
Evaluation, participants should be able to:
- List the common clinical manifestations that develop in persons
with acute (primary) HIV infection.
- Identify the characteristic laboratory findings in persons with
acute (primary) HIV infection.
- Discuss the criteria that establish an AIDS-defining diagnosis.
- Understand that HIV classification is based on lowest category
ever experienced, not the current status.
- Summarize recommendations for the common serologic tests that
should be ordered for HIV-infected persons at their initial evaluation.
- Discuss which patients are at highest risk for acquiring hepatitis
C virus infection.
- Understand vaccination recommendations for pneumococcal disease
and influenza.
- List at least 2 live vaccines that should not be given to HIV-infected
persons.
