Learning Objectives

Upon completing the module Initial Evaluation, participants should be able to:

  1. List the common clinical manifestations that develop in persons with acute (primary) HIV infection.
  2. Identify the characteristic laboratory findings in persons with acute (primary) HIV infection.
  3. Discuss the criteria that establish an AIDS-defining diagnosis.
  4. Understand that HIV classification is based on lowest category ever experienced, not the current status.
  5. Summarize recommendations for the common serologic tests that should be ordered for HIV-infected persons at their initial evaluation.
  6. Discuss which patients are at highest risk for acquiring hepatitis C virus infection.
  7. Understand vaccination recommendations for pneumococcal disease and influenza.
  8. List at least 2 live vaccines that should not be given to HIV-infected persons.
