Upon completing the module Opportunistic
Infections: Prophylaxis, participants should be able to:
- List the criteria for initiating prophylaxis for Pneumocystis
pneumonia.
- Discuss common adverse effects associated with the use of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole

or dapsone.
- Identify the ways in which humans can acquire Toxoplasma
gondii infection.
- Understand the criteria for discontinuing prophylaxis for Toxoplasma encephalitis.
- Identify the CD4 cell count range for HIV-infected patients
are at risk for developing disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex infection.
- Discuss the recommended prophylaxis agents for the prevention
of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex
infection.
- Describe the criteria used for a positive tuberculin skin test
in an HIV-infected person.
- Discuss whether anergy testing is recommended for HIV-infected
