This retinal photograph taken from a patient with HIV retinopathy shows multiple "cotton wool spots". These "cotton wool spots" represent nerve fiber layer infarcts, identical to those often seen in patients with hypertension or diabetes mellitus. These lesions do not cause symptoms and resolve spontaneously.
