Fungal cell membrane synthesis is a multi-step process that involves the conversion of squalene to ergosterol. Fluconazole exerts its effect by selectively inhibiting the fungal cytochrome P-450 enzyme 14 alpha-demethylase. The result is a loss of normal fungal sterols and the accumulation of 14 alpha-methyl sterols within the fungus.
