Major research interests include biomedical prevention of HIV (she is Protocol Co-Chair of VOICE, a large study implemented by the Microbicides Trial Network evaluating HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis administered vaginally and orally to women at high risk for HIV infection in sub-Saharan Africa); the genital microbiome; molecular epidemiology, pathogenesis, and management of bacterial vaginosis; vaginal delivery, pharmacokinetics, and effects on local immunity of antimicrobial and contraceptive agents; sexually transmitted infections and cervical neoplasia in sexual minority women; diagnosis and screening of chlamydial infection; and epidemiology and management of cervicitis.
