HMRC Vision and Mission

Our Vision

Promote healthy aging and reduce the harmful effects of chronic disease through innovative, evidence-based strategies for health marketing and communication.

We believe that:

  • Moving from awareness of healthy choices to engaging in healthy behavior is the single greatest challenge for health communication.
  • Successful health marketing and communication must look beyond simple promotion to incorporate a comprehensive approach to product/program design, distribution, and cost/price.
  • Successful health marketing and communication in a socioeconomically and culturally diverse environment requires more than labeling and translation. It requires working with the values, health literacy, and communication preferences of each particular group.
  • Employers and other intermediaries will play a critical role in reducing the impact of chronic disease.
  • Successful health marketing and communication strategies will not be limited to health benefits, but should also address identity and financial considerations.

Our Mission

The Health Marketing Research Center at the University of Washington promotes healthy aging in a diverse population through advances in the marketing and communication of health information and programs. Our efforts include basic research, community-based research and clinical trials, training, and program development. In pursuing these efforts, we seek active and innovative collaborations with communities, across academic disciplines, and in partnership with public and private-sector organizations.

  • Basic Research

We will conduct focused studies on the segmentation of audiences, design of health-related messages, cultural differences and similarities, cost-effectiveness of options in health communication, and the use of new communication technologies.
  • Community-Based Research & Clinical Trials

In partnership with public and private-sector organizations, we will conduct clinical trials and related field studies that apply and test new strategies for reducing the impact of chronic disease.
  • Training

We will actively engage faculty, students, and community members in collaborative learning experiences. We will develop courses and course modules that will provide students with state-of-the-art knowledge in health marketing and communication.
  • Program Development & Dissemination

In partnership with public and private-sector organizations, we will design and disseminate evidence-based programs to enhance healthy aging.
