Power to the Machine

In recent conversation, we’ve determined some springs and coils comprising the intangible machinery programmed to yield a sustainable globe. We’ve discussed a new cultural fitness display elevating a minimalist lifestyle above that of the gilded 1%, suggested a vision of collective pleasure in rising above consumerism, and posed the concept of a non-zero-sum eco-political world. Additionally, we’ve identified that these approaches to positive change depend upon a cultural paradigm shift: our plastic and metal. What then spurs the emergence of a new value system? What is our wall socket, our power source? What anthropocentric something makes people move?

Although perception of the composition of the human condition varies among personal philosophies, and whether or not humankind is born devil, angel, or blank slate is undetermined, there is consensus that humans seek immediate gratification. Given that thoughts and feelings can be both paradoxical and consciously unknown, action based on holistic interpretation is not our default. Despite the institutionalization of best efforts to inform individuals via news outlets and higher education, generally, people neither think systemically nor act with foresight. Reactionary impulse is particularly prevalent when exacerbated by today’s political circumstance. In our post-truth American society, emotions are more valid than facts, and opinion bears more semblance to feeling than logic. For those in power, goodness and global kinship are second to self-preservation, allegedly and strategically under threat.

Therefore, goodwill cannot be the electricity that brings life to our circuits – it is merely the oil that lubricates the system. Our spark must pander to instinct, either via deterrence or incentive. Implementing ecological debt policy and its ilk is key in inspiring divestment and non-consumption because such become equitable components of our financial best interest, which drives action and value re-normalization. To manufacture a green world, we must first create the power to do so.
