Elon Musk and Hope for the Anthropocene

If you have forty minutes to spare, I highly recommend you watch the following video:

Elon Musk gives me reason to be hopeful in the Anthropocene. For him, no idea is too big or far-fetched, and I am astounded by his unfettered ambition. He thinks of the future he wants to see, and he brings the minds together to make it happen.

I find his outlook on the future to be inspiring because it is so easy to fall into the trap of hopelessness, but Musk challenges this sentiment by embodying the appetite for progress that I would argue is near the heart of what it means to be human. He is a reminder of humanities knack for overcoming the most dire of circumstances.

In my previous post, Justifying Inaction, I explored the idea of leadership in the Anthropocene. Before watching this TED talk I knew that leadership would be necessary as we move into the Anthropocene, but I did not know from where it could be found. Elon Musk’s achievements and ambitions, however, give me hope that he can not only be a leader for my own generation, but also a trailblazer for future leaders. His work reinforces the adage “anything is possible,” and it does so in a way that I believe will inspire others, motivating them to be ambitious in their own endeavors.

After watching the TED talk, I’m curious to know your opinions. Are you as inspired or impressed as I am? Do you believe I am being over eager? Let me know.
