We're very excited about our book sale this year, and we hope you can be there. Stock your shelves with gently used gardening books! You'll find a
wide range of topics on all things horticultural, at irresistible
prices.
The Preview Party and Rare Book Auction is Friday, April 1st from 5 to 8 pm. Tickets cost $25 in advance or $30 at the door. To purchase tickets, visit the library or call 206-543-0415.
The book sale on Saturday, April 2nd is free and open to everyone. The sale runs from 9 am to 3 pm.
With so many books to offer, the library staff could use some help setting up and taking down the sale. We would be very grateful for your help moving boxes from 9 to 11 Friday morning and/or 3 to 5 Saturday afternoon. Can you help? Please contact us at hortlib@uw.edu by March 18.
Artful Rainwater Design by Stuart Echols and Eliza Pennypacker reviewed by Brian Thompson
Stuart
Echols and Eliza Pennypacker are on the faculty of the Department of
Landscape Architecture at Penn State University. They have combined
their academic
interests in stormwater management and sustainable landscapes to write Artful Rainwater Design.
Much
of the tone of the book is captured in this quotation about changing
terminology: “Stormwater—a waste product and common enemy blamed for
property damage
through flooding and for surface water and aquatic system damage
through pollutant conveyance—has morphed into rainwater, a valued
natural resource beneficial to our water cycle.” Techniques, design
principles, dealing with public relations, and many case
studies—including several in the Pacific Northwest—make this an
important book for anyone involved with any aspect of water management
in urban settings.
Hidden Gems of the Miller Library, Part IV Mushroom Observer, an online mycology resource reviewed by Laura Blumhagen
Ever been stumped by a fungus? Can't decide whether the bird's nest fungi you're looking at are Cyathus or Crucibulum? Enter Mushroom Observer, a fascinating online compendium of mycological observations from around the world, submitted, reviewed and rated by a cadre of enthusiastic and knowledgeable mushroom, slime mold, and lichen observers. The site has grown substantially since it was mentioned in a Fall 2013 Plant Science Bulletin paper by Morgan R. Gostel, Manuela Dal-Forno, and Andrea Weeks entitled A Navigation Guide to Cyberinfrastructure Tools for Botanical and Lichenological Systematics Research. This is one online resource I know I'll use again and again.
