Volume 2, Issue 10 Welcome to the Library! Peer-reviewed journals featured
Welcome to the library, students and faculty! Our best
resource is our staff, with decades of cumulative experience in helping
both faculty and students. Visit us in Merrill Hall at the Center for
Urban Horticulture (Monday: 9-8; Tuesday-Friday: 9-5; Saturday:
9-3).
To help you get the most from your research time, this month's display in the north window highlights our collection of peer-reviewed publications. Peer-reviewed journals
(also called refereed publications) are scholarly works that typically
represent the latest original research in the field, research that has been
generally accepted by academic and professional peers for dissemination and
discussion. From Conifer Quarterly to Urban Forestry and Urban Greening, we have uniquely useful publications on a wide range of botany, horticulture, and restoration topics.
Miller Library 30th Anniversary Celebration
This year marks thirty years of service for the Elisabeth C. Miller Library! Visit the library Wednesday, October 14, anytime
between 3 and 7pm for refreshments and a chance to hear clips from our
oral history collection. We'll also be featuring a display of rare
books, a sneak peak at new titles in our children's collection, and a
tour of our web resources.
Please say you'll come! RSVP to hortlib@uw.edu or (206)543-0415.
New research on invasive grasses and forest management
Using
fire as a management tool in temperate forests is counterproductive if
the habitat has been invaded by non-native grass. Researchers
found native tree seedling survival rates decreased by 54% in
experiments that compared infested plots that were burned with those
that were not. Read the full article on any UW-connected device at the link below.

grass invasion interact to suppress tree regeneration in temperate
deciduous forests.
