Borrow Books

The Fine Print

The book drop is open, so you may return borrowed materials. In order to enable placing new holds, you will need to return any items you still have at home.

To borrow books you first need to Place a Hold in the catalog.  Go to hortlib.kohacatalog.com and search for the item(s) you wish to borrow. You will need to log into your account. If you have forgotten your login and password, please email us hortlib@uw.edu. When your item is available, we will contact you to schedule a pickup.

It may take a week or more to prepare your item for pick-up, depending on staff availability. Thank you for your patience. You will receive an email notification when the hold is ready for pickup. If you do not have email, we will call you.

When you come in to pick up your books, they will already be checked out to you and stored in a clearly marked bag with your name, on a covered table in the Merrill Commons greenhouse. If you cannot make the scheduled time, please log into your library account and cancel the pickup, or call us at 206-543-0415 during the pickup time. You may also reply to the scheduled pickup email.

We will expect you at the scheduled time. Please wear a mask and keep 6 feet of distance from the pick-up table and from others who may be waiting in line. Please do not approach the table to pick-up your books until the staff have returned into the building.

We wish we could chat with you, but in order to prioritize health and safety, we must avoid face-to-face conversations. Please send us an email if you have any questions.
Once you return  materials to the library, it may take a few days before they are cleared from your account, as this is dependent on staff availability.

Time is the best disinfectant.
Your holds have had a seven-day quarantine between users. We do not use sanitizers, disinfectants, solvents, or cleaning products on our books, and neither should you —using them can damage library materials.
