Are there any really big databases of plants, plants and more plants?!?
Yes. The two below often link to each other, making either one a good starting point for your searches.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Plants Databaseis one
of the best with very detailed information about all plants that are
native or naturalized in the United States. Excellent links, reference
sources and hard-to-get information like germination requirements can be
found here.

Hortiplex provides an excellent starting point for searching
for plants on the Internet. Each search will provide not only information
and images but also links to other sites, vendors and input from other
users.

Be sure to browse the Plant Identification and Selection section of the Miller Library's Directory of Horticultural Web Sites. Many sites are database driven.
