Jim Mullins' laboratory is part of the Department of Microbiology in the University of Washington's School of Medicine. They have numerous past and current investigations that involve samples provided by PIC participants.
The Mullins lab uses the techniques of molecular, computational and virus biology to provide basic insights into the HIV-human host relationship. They are investigating the molecular evolution of HIV-1 and HIV-2 from two viewpoints: From within individual patients and between patients from the human population at large. This research has implications for the development of more potent and highly targeted HIV therapies, vaccine development, and increased understanding of the transmission of HIV.
