Symptoms of acute HIV infection

When people first become infected with HIV, over half will develop symptoms within the first 2-4 weeks after exposure. These symtoms last about two weeks on average, though they may last for either less or more than that. They include:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Sore throat
  • Weight loss
  • Muscle aches
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Night sweats
  • Diarrhea
  • Rash

Having these symptoms does not mean that you have HIV, because these same symptoms can occur with the flu, mono, or strep throat. But if you may have been exposed to HIV/AIDS and are experiencing some of these symptoms, get tested.
