Connie Celum
Principal Investigator
I am the principal investigator for the Seattle HPTU site. I am an infectious
disease physician and an epidemiologist. My interest in HIV, both from
clinical, prevention, and treatment perspectives, was stimulated during my clinical
training in San Francisco.
My involvement began in 1994 when the 8 domestic HPTU sites were
originally
funded. Studies in which I am particularly involved include development
of the initial vaccine preparedness study (locally called "Be A Hero");
the special study for persons enrolled in HPTU who became newly infected
with HIV; trials of nonoxynol-9 and new microbicide products; the behavioral
intervention trial (Explore); and phase I-III HIV vaccine trials. In
addition to this, I am involved in other studies investigating herpes and
other STDs as important risk factors for HIV infection.
