What is Project Explore?
Project Explore is a three year behavioral
trial that looks at the efficacy of counseling that is available to people
getting tested for HIV. The study has two interventions that a
participant could be randomly assigned to:
- a behavioral intervention with 10 one-on-one counseling sessions
that are individually tailored and delivered over a four month
period.
- standard counseling delivered semi-annually including pre and post
test sessions.
The trial consists of 4,200 participants in the United States.
Here in Seattle we have 742 men enrolled in Project Explore.
Primary Objective
To evaluate the efficacy of a behavioral intervention to reduce incidence
of HIV infection among men who have sex with men. Specifically we will
compare the incidence of HIV infections observed in the randomized group
of men in the behvioral intervention to the men randomized to receive the
standard HIV pre-test and post-test risk reduction counseling.
Secondary Objectives
- To evaluate the effectiveness of a behavioral intervention to
reduce incidence of HIV infection, HSV-2, and rectal and urethral
gonorrhea.
- To assess self-reported behavior change as it relates to protection
against HIV and other STDs.
- To assess the effect of the intervention on sexual risk-taking
associated with alcohol and other drug use.
- To evaluate the cost and cost-effectiveness of the intervention in
preventing HIV infections.
