What is the Link Study?
The Link Study was conducted by the University of Washington for HIV-negative men who have herpes and who have sex with other men. In the Seattle area, 270 men participated in this study. This study looked at the connection of genital herpes (HSV-2) and HIV acquisition. Research studies have shown that people with HSV-2 are twice as likely to contact HIV.

The HPTU staff would like to thank all of the volunteers for their participation and commitment to the HPTN 039 clinical study.  Though the results are not what we had hoped for, we are proud of the many achievements of the HPTN 039 study.  Study volunteers are the true heroes in trying to find new HIV prevention tools and in advancing prevention science and medicine. We truly appreciate your willingness to participate in this important public health endeavor.
