The BIT (Behavioral Intervention Trial) / 015 Pilot Study was a nine-month study
designed to test
out the feasibility of different aspects of the Project
Explore protocol with a smaller group of participants before beginning the
full-scale Explore study with 4,200 men. Over 240 men enrolled in the BIT
study at six different sites, with about 40 here at the Seattle site.
What were the findings?
Thanks to our study volunteers, we were able to develop study procedures and refine
the protocol for Project Explore and conduct that
full-scale trial comparing two different types of counseling.
Specific BIT information we reviewed included:
- Completion rates for intervention sessions
- Success of recruiting high-risk men as measured by a review of the number and
characteristics of men approached, screened and enrolled by study site and
recruitment strategy, including comparison of baseine risk reported by the pilot
group and the VPS MSM cohort.
- Adherence to the protocol as measured by a review of study site randomization
procedures, audiotapes of intervention and control condition, and data forms.
- Descriptive data on reported reasons for refusing or participating in the trial
