What is the VISION Study?
VISION is a national study, conducted locally at the University of Washington, for
HIV-negative men who have sex with other men. VISION compares behavior between
men who have already enrolled in a vaccine trial to men who are
interested
in enrolling in a vaccine trial at some time in the future. Men in both groups are
asked questions about their reasons for joining, or wanting to join a vaccine trial.
Men in both groups are also asked about their sexual behavior, sexually transmitted
diseases, drug use, sexual activity with their last three partners, attitudes about
health care, relationships with people who they depend on for support, attitudes about
vaccines and antiretroviral drug use (HIV medication).
What does the study involve?
Men who are interested in enrolling in a vaccine trial come to the clinic
every six months for free and confidential HIV testing and counseling as well as an
anonymous questionnaire. There are a total of eight visits over the course of a
year and a half. Each visit lasts approximately 45 minutes. At each of the
pre-test counseling visits participants are asked to give one tube of blood
(approximately two tablespoons). At the end of the study, we will compare the
two groups to better understand why people join HIV vaccine studies.
How can I get more information?
