Thesis or Project Overview:
Use this checklist to help keep track of the major checkpoints along the way to completing the MPH thesis or project and graduating.
First you will need to choose a specific thesis or project topic. You may want to consider factors such as whether your employer might help fund your research or whether you are able to work with existing data from a secondary source instead of collecting your own.
- Thesis: The thesis should answer a question that contributes to new knowledge and is generalized beyond a single setting.
Faculty and Student Guidelines for completing the MPH Thesis - Project:
The project may answer a question of practical importance, or develop, test, and evaluate an intervention, cirriculum, or protocol for application within a particular agency or community setting. An additional measure of quality for a project is whether it effectively contributes to meeting the goals and objectives of the agency where it was conducted.
Project Option - Detailed Guidelines
Once you have a general idea of your topic, you'll be better able to choose appropriate members for your committee. Each member must agree to participate in the committee.
When you are ready to actually begin work, you must make an initial report of the Thesis/Project committee arrangement to the EXDP program.
Send an email cc'ing your committee members to: uwedp@u.washington.edu
The email should include the following:
- Name, email and phone number for each of the initial committee members.
- Initial title of your proposed project or thesis
- A request the each committee member replies to the email and agrees to participate.
(Students will be responsible for making sure that their committee responds)
Working with your committee, you will need to develop a detailed work plan and timeline for your thesis/project. This should include whether your proposed work will be eligible to apply for an exemption from the Full Human Subjects Review.
All theses and any project involving research with human subjects data must be sent through UW Human Subjects Review. Students work closely to with their committee chair who must sign the application form before it is considered for departmental review. EXDP students may send their completed application package directly to the EXDP program office who will route it through the review process.
At the beginning of each quarter in which you register for Thesis or Project credits, you must report to your committee and the EXDP program office both your progress and your intent to register for credits.
Send an email cc'ing your committee members to: uwedp@u.washington.edu
The email should include the following:
- Brief outline of the goals, tasks and timeline for the quarter
- Number of Thesis or Project credits registered for the quarter
