Bioethics Grand Rounds - Delivering Precision Medicine: The Role of Practical Wisdom
Bioethics & Humanities and the Ethics Advisory Committee UWMC, University of Washington

Dr. Wylie Burke

Molecular technologies and large scale data offer the promise of "precision medicine" leading to a host of better diagnostic tools, prevention strategies, and disease treatments. But powerful technologies can produce harms as well as benefits. Aristotle's concept of phronesis – the practical wisdom acquired from experience and morally informed mentorship – can provide important guidance. Tapping the wisdom of clinicians and patients will help to ensure that the tools of precision medicine are crafted and delivered in ways that support the fundamental goals of medicine.
