Susan Allan has been the Director of the Northwest Center for Public Health Practice since July 2008. Prior to coming to the University of Washington, she worked in state and local public health for more than 23 years, including 3 years as Public Health Director and State Health Officer for Oregon, and 18 years as the Health Director for Arlington County, Virginia. In Arlington, for two years she also was responsible for programs for behavioral health and substance abuse programs. She is a Fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine.

She served on the Institute of Medicine committees that produced the reports "Who Will Keep the Public Healthy? Educating Public Health Professionals for the 21st Century," (2002) and "Training Physicians for Public Health Careers" (2007). She is currently a member of the Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice of the Institute of Medicine, and is Vice President of the Council on Education for Public Health.
