Susan Allan has been affiliated with the Northwest Center for Public Health Practice since July 2008, serving as Director from 2008 through February 2013. Prior to coming to the University of Washington, she worked in state and local public health for more than 23 years, including 3 years as Public Health Director and State Health Officer for Oregon, and 18 years as the Health Director for Arlington County, Virginia. In Arlington, for two years she also was responsible for programs for behavioral health and substance abuse programs. She is board certified in Preventive Medicine/General Public Health and is a Fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine.

She served on the Institute of Medicine committees that produced the reports "Who Will Keep the Public Healthy? Educating Public Health Professionals for the 21st Century," (2002) and "Training Physicians for Public Health Careers" (2007). She was a member of the Institute of Medicine's Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice from 2006-2012. She has been extensively involved with accreditation of schools and programs of public health, serving as a member of the Council on Education for Public Health from 2004-2010 and having chaired more than ten accreditation site visits in the US and in other countries. From 2008-2013, she served as Editor-in-Chief for the School of Public Health's journal, Northwest Public Health.
