Areas of Emphasis

Students are required to complete an "area of emphasis" taking a minimum of five courses or 15 credits in specialized theory or methods courses.

Students may choose one of the defined areas, or they may design an area of emphasis of their own with courses selected in conjunction with his/her mentor, based on past course work, experience, proposed dissertation topic, and career goals.

 



AREA OF EMPHASIS:

Cancer Prevention and Control

Lead Faculty:   Donald Patrick

The goals of this area of emphasis are to:
  • Understand essential aspects of biobehavioral research, communications, and outcomes research as applied to cancer prevention and control;
  • Be effective evaluators of biobehavioral interventions, including communications, using state-of-the-art outcomes methodologies;
  • Demonstrate essential elements of writing original research proposals in biobehavioral research, communications, and outcomes as applied to cancer prevention and control.

The Biobehavioral Cancer Prevention and Control emphasis provides the necessary preparation for health services researchers and health policy analysts to address the tremendous array of issues that are relevant to 21st century cancer prevention and control in the United States.
