Areas of Emphasis
Students are required to complete an "area of emphasis"
taking a minimum of five courses or 15 credits in specialized
theory or methods courses.
Students may choose one of the defined areas, or they may design an area of emphasis of their
own with courses selected in conjunction with his/her mentor, based on past course work, experience, proposed dissertation topic, and career goals.
AREA OF EMPHASIS:
Maternal and Child Health
An emphasis in Maternal and Child Health (MCH)
provides students with a historical framework and
introduction to current topics and problems in assuring
the health and well-being of a large segment of the
nation's most vulnerable citizens. Maternal and Child
Health, within Public Health, takes a population-based
perspective on research, education, advocacy, and
administration. Typically, MCH practitioners are
involved with infrastructure building (e.g., needs
assessment, information systems, standards development),
population health monitoring (e.g., percent of very low
birth weight births, percent of children without health
insurance, incidence of adolescent suicide) and applied
prevention research (e.g., program planning and
evaluation). MCH works at a systems level to complement
direct services provided by clinical practice providers.
Course requirements:
16 credits total. (See Required
and approved Elective courses below.)
Students are encouraged to expand the list of approved
electives by requesting a review of candidate courses
(contact Dr. Huebner).
Admission to Area of Emphasis:
An interview with the MCH Program Director, Colleen
