Services

Document Delivery

Document delivery is a service available to all faculty and staff within the Department of Health Services. It is also available to Extended Degree students. The HSIC staff will locate, copy or borrow, and deliver any materials needed for research and teaching. We will make every effort to track down an item and will always ask permission before proceeding with any transaction which involves additional fees, such as interlibrary loan.

To make a request:

  • Make your request by email whenever possible.
  • Always include a budget number.
  • Let us know if this is a RUSH request so that we can give it highest priority.

Journal Articles

Copyright: Be aware of copyright restrictions. "Fair use" is defined as one article or up to 10% of a journal issue. A Copyright Clearance Center fee can be charged for copies made beyond fair use. We will ask permission to do this if you have requested many articles from one journal not available in our collection.

Borrowing Books, Reports, Reference Materials, Theses

The HSIC has a small book and reference collection and most items circulate with special permission from the librarian.

The majority of materials requested will be available from the various UW campus libraries. For example, theses from the School of Public Health are available in the HSLIC. We can borrow books for you if you fill out a "proxy borrowers card" form (available from us).

You are responsible for any fines incurred. We simply pick up and deliver, or return books for you. We keep a record of these transactions in our Circulation file. Books fetched by us should be returned to us so we can clear your records.

Loan Periods

The Health Sciences Libraries and Information Center loan period is two weeks for non-Reserve items.

The Suzzallo Library has an "indefinite loan" period for some materials. Each April the borrower will receive a list of items they have checked out during the year on indefinite loan. These items must be returned or renewed before the middle of May to avoid fines.

For a detailed explanation see: The Loan Code of the University of Washington Libraries.

Renewals

If we check out a book for you with a proxy borrowers card, please let us know if you want the book renewed and we'll do it for you.

If you have borrowed a book on your own from the UW Libraries, you may renew it online.

Interlibrary Loan

  • If an item is not available at any of the UW libraries we can make an ILL request through UW interlibrary loan services.
  • ILLs take from a few days to a few weeks and the cost varies. Usually the turnaround time is speedy.
  • Books, reports, theses, may be requested through interlibrary loan and must be returned promptly so that they can be returned on time to distant lending institutions.
  • If a journal is not received at the University of Washington, we can request a photocopy of an article from another library (entire journals almost never circulate).

Information Management

The Health Services Information Center staff can help you locate, retrieve, organize, and evaluate information from many sources and in many formats. We can also teach you to use many of the resource tools available electronically and in print or mention sources of information you may not have considered.

Reference Questions and Database Searching

Some of our services:

  • Verify references for publication
  • Help in determining appropriate databases and controlled vocabulary headings for searching
  • Research information sources (including the internet) for the topic you are investigating
  • Locate statistical information

TOCs and Current Awareness

You can view the table of contents of approximately 45 "core" health services journals by visiting their websites. (Examples: New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Health Services Research, Medical Care, Hospitals & Health Networks).

We can help you set up a current awareness service, which will send the table of contents of up to 50 journals of your choice to your email as they become available. You can also choose key words as subjects to look for in articles. This service is made possible through our site license with Ingenta Reveal (formerly CARL Uncover Reveal).

Faculty and graduate students at the UW can receive customized reports of new library resources that match their interest profile. For more information see Zephyr or talk to your librarian.

Teaching and Consulting

We are always happy to do one-on-one teaching and consulting.
