Arranging Readings Using Course Packs and E-Reserves

Readings that are not in the required textbooks for a course may be made available to students either as a printed and bound Course Pack, or on the web via the library E-reserves system. An article can not be used in both a Course Pack and in E-reserves during the same quarter.

Books, Videos and hardcopies of articles can also be placed on reserve for use in the Health Sciences Library.

If you would like help finding copies of articles for evaluation or have any questions at all, please contact:

Why use a Course Pack?

  • Students pay for the Course Pack and can keep it.
    (E-reserve readings are temporary.)
  • Students may be more likely to read printed materials.
  • Copyright issues are resolved by the Copyright Permissions Center.
(For E-reserves, instructors assume responsibility for assuring that copyright guidelines for "fair use" are followed)
Why use E-reserves?

  • If students will actually read articles on the computer screen, they can avoid printing costs.
(In most cases they are likely to print the readings so they can take notes or highlight.)
  • Readings can be added at any time, sometimes on short notice.
(Course Pack readings involve copyright royalty arrangements and binding so submission processing may take longer.)

In most cases, a Course Pack will be the most direct, effective and legitimate method of distributing readings that are not in the required textbook.

Arranging Readings for a Course.

Readings that you want distributed in a Course Pack:

  • 6-8 weeks prior to the start of the quarter, send either a copyright permissions form or an email to cpc93@u.washington.edu at the Copyright Permissions Center.
The form or email should include:
    - Your contact information
    - Course name, number, quarter
    - Estimated enrollment
    - Copy Center:  Health Sciences I-146
    - Publication title, author for each reading
    - Article/chapter names and numbers for each reading
    - Year of copyright for each reading
    - ISBN/ISSN code for each reading
  • The Copyright Permissions Center will contact publishers and calculate the royalty costs of your Course Pack, sending you information about the cost of including each article.  If you decide not to use an article, tell the Copyright Permissions Center to remove it and recalculate the costs.
  • At least 1 week prior to the start of the quarter, take a clean photocopy of each reading, arranged in the correct order, to the Health Sciences I-146 copy center.  Include a copy of the final royalty costs from the Copyright Permission Center and a copy of the Course Pack Request form.

Copying Note:
If the reading is photocopied from a book, you are required to include a photocopy of the front and back of the title page.

Readings that you want distributed via E-reserves:

  • Articles that are not available on the web to the UW community, will need to be scanned into Adobe Acrobat .pdf format from paper copies.  Faculty assume responsibility for assuring that the copyright guidelines for fair use are followed for these documents.
  • Compile a list of readings that shows how you would like the E-reserves organized.  Make photocopies of those articles that are not already available as links on the web and take them, along with the list, to the Health Sciences Library reserve desk. Be prepared to provide general information about your course, (SLN etc . . . ), so that it can be entered into the library catalog listings.  Try to allow at least 2 weeks for the processing of E-reserves.

  • NOTE:  In most cases, it is better to maintain the current syllabus on a course web page rather than scanned as a .pdf document  inside of E-reserves.  If desired, E-reserves can add a link to the syllabus on the course web page.
