Department of Sociology and Anthropology
Applications are invited for a tenure-track position involving sociology
and advanced technology. This position will be of particular interest
to those with interests in Science and Technology Studies (STS), Social
Studies of Scientific Knowledge (SSK) and/or Public Understandings of
Science (PUS). The position will be in the Department of Sociology and
Anthropology at the rank of Assistant Professor to commence July 1, 2002.
The position is subject to budgetary approval. Advanced technology is
one element of the tripartite mission of the University, which has strong
ties to the local advanced technology community. The Department is a unit
in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, which is developing BA programs
and interdisciplinary research projects in information technology.
Technology is a field in the Faculty's new interdisciplinary doctoral
program in Cultural Mediations, which commences in September 2001 and
to which the Department contributes. The successful candidate will contribute
to the development of these initiatives, and will supply intellectual
leadership to the Department's current activities in advanced and information
technology. The department offers 3-year degrees and 4-year honours degrees
in both Sociology and Anthropology, master's programs in Sociology and
Anthropology, and a doctoral program in Sociology. The department has
played a leading role in articulating the mutual interests of Sociology
and Anthropology as disciplines, and Anthropology faculty frequently supervise
doctoral candidates in Sociology. The department is completing a review
of its undergraduate programs as it positions itself in relation to recent
global developments and the renewed mission of the University. An ability
to contribute to the teaching of the Department's graduate programs, as
well as to its various theoretical and methodological courses, will be
considered an advantage.
The successful candidate will have a completed doctorate in Sociology,
Anthropology or a cognate discipline or field, an established record of
publications, and will have demonstrated superior ability as a teacher.
