ACQUISITIONS LIBRARIAN / BIBLIOGRAPHER FOR THE HISTORY
OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Full-time Position
Description: Will primarily be responsible for identifying, acquiring,
and cataloging new materials for the Library, including contemporary and
out-of-print books and journals, as well as gifts and special collections,
in all areas of the history of science and technology.
Duties: Oversee collection development of secondary sources, including
assessing areas of the LibraryÕs holdings for potential growth, and establishing
procedures for managing gifts, duplicates and special collections. Monitor
and enhance cataloging methods and standards for the secondary source
collection. Manage preservation activities for the secondary collection.
Provide reference service to Library users, and serve as liaison to Dibner
fellows and affiliates for determining information and research needs.
Initiate new web projects while managing ongoing web pages, and train
others in web applications. With Head of Exhibitions and Publications,
identify and plan appropriate library events and activities. May participate
in outreach and other promotional activities. Staff Reading Room as needed.
Work on special projects as requested.
Qualifications: M.L.S. degree. Undergraduate or graduate degree in one
of the sciences or History of Science strongly preferred. Library experience,
preferably in collections or reference, required. Strong computer skills,
including familiarity with automated library software, OCLC, and HTML,
required. Experience with the use of media equipment such as scanners
and graphics software desired. Should have strong communication skills
and effective writing ability. Attention to detail essential. Must be
energetic and able to organize tasks, set priorities, and work cooperatively
with others. Knowledge of one or more foreign languages helpful.
The Burndy Library is a research collection for the history of science
and technology, and serves as the major resource for the Dibner Institute
for the History of Science and Technology, a center for advanced research
located on the M.I.T. campus. The Library collections include historical
books and pamphlets, manuscripts, instruments, visual and artifactual
materials, and significant holdings of both older and recent secondary
monographs and journals on the history of science and technology. The
Library is open Monday Ð Friday, 9am to 5pm.

TECHNICAL SERVICES COORDINATOR
Full-time Position
Description: The Technical Services Coordinator is responsible for the
physical processing of all incoming library materials, cataloging-related
maintenance, and stacks management.
Duties: Physical processing: includes managing all facets of bindery
shipments; preparing reports and materials for transfer to exhibitors
or for conservation treatment; assisting with identifying materials requiring
preservation or conservation; maintaining and organizing conservation
supplies; assisting with exhibition installations; and bookplating, labeling,
and attaching mylar jackets and conservation enclosures. Cataloging maintenance:
includes editing MARC records and communicating library holdings to OCLC;
serving as primary liaison to OCLC and TLC (automated library software)
for technical issues, including managing software and upgrades, and training
other staff in these systems; troubleshooting and resolving technical
problems and issues arising from these systems. Stacks management: duties
include shelving, shifting, space planning, maintaining the New Acquisitions
display, and related tasks. In addition, the Technical Services Coordinator
is responsible for assisting with web page development and maintenance;
staffing the Reading Room as necessary; and performing various other tasks,
including clerical and other assistance to the Dibner Institute.
Qualifications: B.A./B.S. degree. Library experience, preferably in technical
services and/or conservation, required. Strong computer skills, including
familiarity with automated library software (especially cataloging module),
HTML, imaging equipment and software, desired. Should have strong communications
skills and effective writing ability. Attention to detail essential. Must
