The Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine and of the Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine (Ref.no. 542/01)

The Wellcome Trust has agreed with the University to fund a new Chair in the History of Science, Technology and Medicine (HSTM), through its University Award scheme. The appointee will be expected to direct the Centre and the Unit for the next seven years, enhancing its reputation as an international focus for research, scholarship and teaching, especially for HSTM since 1800. The salary will be on the professorial scale negotiable from stlg37.5k p.a. (under review) appropriate range according to age and experience ( although initial appointment at Reader or Senior Lecturer level may be considered.)

The candidate chosen by the University (with representatives of the Trust) will be required to apply to the Trust for a personal research project in the history of medicine, to occupy at least 30% of the seven years during which the Trust will be supporting the post. The final decision should be made in Martch 2002, with appointment as soon as possible thereafter.

CHAIR and Directorship of the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine and of the Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine

The Wellcome Trust has agreed with the University to fund a new Chair in the History of Science, Technology and Medicine through the University Award scheme. The appointee will head the Centre and the Wellcome Unit in succession to Professor John Pickstone, who will concentrate on research. The appointee will be expected to build the reputation of the Centre/Unit as an international focus for research, scholarship and teaching, especially for the History of STM since 1800.

The post is available at Professorial level, though appointment at Reader or Senior Lecturer level may be considered; the salary will be on the appropriate range according to age and experience. Under the University Award scheme the post will be 100% funded by the Trust in Years 1 to 5, 50% in Year 6 and 25% in Year 7, being fully taken over by the University thereafter and tenable to the normal age of retirement.

The candidate chosen by the University (with representatives of the Trust) will be required to submit an application to the Trust for the funding of a personal research project in the history of medicine. This project will be expected to occupy at least 30% of the > appointee's time during the Wellcome Trust's funding of the new > position, during which seven years the appointee is expected to act as Director. (This arrangement does not rule out a separate application to the Trust for research assistance with the project)

The schedule is as follows:
*Closing date for applications to the University, 15 September 2001
*Presentations and interviews with CHSTM and the appointment committee, late October Application (Research proposal) to the Trust by 1 December
*Decision by the Trust, March 2002
* Appointment, as soon as possible thereafter.

JOB SPECIFICATION

1) To develop plans for the future of CHSTM and the Wellcome Unit* (in conjunction with the staff of the Centre and Unit and in consultation with the Faculty of Science and Engineering and theAdvisory Group for the Centre/ Unit); to monitor progress, and to revise and update the plans as appropriate.

2) To manage and lead the Centre and Unit for a period of 7 years (subject to satisfactory performance), including a) further improvement and expansion of Masters programmes, PhD programmes, and undergraduate teaching in HSTM, b) further development of funded research programmes in HSTM (in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust and other funding agencies), c) management of the CHSTM/Unit budgets, d) staff management and development, and all other duties of Heads of Department (CHSTM is a department in the Faculty of Science and Engineering), and e) supervision of the Centre/Unit Office which presently includes an administrator as well as a secretary.

3) To contribute personally to the research profile of the Centre/Unit through the Wellcome project mentioned in the description of this post, and through the promotion of other research projects, studentships etc.

4) To contribute personally to the teaching of the Centre (in as much as administrative and individual research commitments allow), and to the supervision of research students and research fellows.

5) To develop the local, regional, national and international roles of the Centre/Unit including a) promoting interdisciplinary teaching and research, especially in Manchester, b) futhering the collaborations of CHSTM with similar groups in Britain, Europe, N America and beyond, c) increasing collaboration with the NHS, archives, museums and other agencies, and d) raising the profile of the history of STM among the various professional and lay publics.

In all the above matters, the Director will work closely with the staff and especially the Management group in CHSTM, which presently includes the co-ordinators for undergraduate and for postgraduate programmes, plus a representative of the other staff.

* Under new funding arrangements proposed by the Trust's History of Medicine Grants Panel the term `Unit' will no longer be used after September 2003 and will be replaced by `Group'. Further information will be available later this year.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

1) An international reputation for research and writing in the history of medicine and/or biomedical sciences, preferably in the period since 1800. A PhD and an extensive list of quality publications in history of medicine and allied fields would normally be required.

2) Proven managerial capacity in a senior position in a University department (or similar institution).

3) Proven intellectual leadership, includinge securing grants and successfully managing research projects.

4) Successful experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and a commitment to the improvement of teaching and supervision.

5) Interesting and important agendas for research and writing in HSTM -- for themselves, for associated researchers, and for CHSTM and the Wellcome Unit more generally.

6) A demonstrable, strong commitment to:
a) history of medicine within the wider frame of HSTM,
b) interdisciplinary teaching and research,
c) local, national and international collaborations,
d) enhancing the public roles of HSTM, and to
e) working openly and creatively with the staff of the Unit and CHSTM and with the University to ensure Manchester's continued pre-eminence in this field.
