Appendix A: Checklist of Recommended Foods/Beverages to Pack

Fruits and Vegetables (both fresh and dried)

apples
apricots
oranges
pears
bananas (although bananas and pears get bruised too easily)
fruit leather (not roll ups)
flavored prunes
raisins
baby carrots
celery sticks
bell pepper strips
sun-dried tomatoes
soy chips
soy beans
dried yams (delicious and great for travel)

Power/Grainola Bars

Quaker Oats chewy granola bars
Balance Outdoor bars
Clif bars (assorted flavors, favorites for some people)
energy bars (Pria, Balance)
Luna Bars

Dairy

yogurt (packed in a Ziploc bag in case it bursts)
cheese (e.g., string cheese, sliced, block cheese cut up into cubes)

Cereal

granola (Blue Heron bakery rebel crunch granola (non-fat, non-sweet))
higher-protein cereals (Kashi)
Quaker Crunchy Corn Bran cereal (eat as cereal or munch from your hand as a snack)

Meat and Fish

anned tuna (with crackers or pita)
tuna kits (come with tuna, crackers, mayo for mixing)
jerky (turkey and beef - from CostCo)

Breads and Crackers

emergency bagel or two (eat with a slice of cheese in it) (Note: bagels do not squish like bread)
crackers (to go with cheese. Ak-Mak whole wheat and sesame crackers came highly recommended for their fiber and taste)
graham crackers
tortillas (to eat with peanut butter and raisins as a snack or meal)

Nuts and Munchies

nuts (mixed and single variety such as cashew nuts, almonds)
pretzels (plain, soy pretzels)
trailmix (mixture of low fat ingredients: raisins, dried figs, dried cherries, prunes, almonds, pecans and dry cereal)
peanut butter, freshly ground

Soups

Fantastic Food and Nile Spice dehydrated soups (re-hydrate with hot water from your coffee maker)

Beverages

bottled water (buy away from the conference center to save money)
teabags (favorites: English breakfast tea for daytime/conference consumption and mint tea bags for an evening drink; PG Tips, a robust British tea; green tea)
sugar-free hot chocolate
'Slim Fast'
juicy-juice juice boxes
red grapefruit juice
v-8 or tomato juice (low sodium or spicy)

Candies and Sweets

hard candy - JUST in case of coughs (of course)
chocolate
gummies
lemon drops
mints
fresh-baked cookies or muffins
