After the conference
Take time to reflect. It’s important to reflect on your conference experience and collect the ‘lessons learned’. Incorporate ideas and lessons learned that have worked for others into your organization.
Write up a summary. Use the lessons learned to form the basis for writing up the details of what occurred at the meeting. Capture stories, descriptions of sessions, information of use, ideas to follow up on, and people met. Share whatever is relevant with the HAS Newsletter editor, other Section, SPIG or Caucus newsletter editors, or The Nation’s Health so that your colleagues can find out about sessions they were unable to attend.
Following up. Follow up with the interesting people you met at the annual meeting via email as soon as you can after the meeting and touch base with them periodically throughout the year to maintain that connection. If you are consulting this is especially important since people are busy and will forget you if you don't remind them of your skills.
Promises made – and kept? Jot down everything you have promised to get involved with or do. When you return home review your “promise” list and take the time to note obligations in your Calendar or Task List to ensure you follow through.
Business cards. When you get home, enter contact information from the front of the business cards you collected and notes from the back into your PIM’s (personal information manager) contact list.
Seek reimbursement in a timely fashion – usually within 30 days. Use your agency’s reimbursement form and fill it in fully. Organize your receipts so that they are easily processed. Make a photocopy of the reimbursement form and your receipts to keep in your files until you get the reimbursement check.
Request copies of presentations/papers. For those sessions that you could not attend, contact the speakers and request copies of their presentations/papers.
