HHS Launches Pilot Project with WebMD to Make HHS Consumer Health Information More Widely Available
http://www.hhs.gov/news/press/2004pres/20040517.html

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today launched a 9-month pilot project with WebMD to make HHS consumer health information more widely available and to enhance the Department's dissemination efforts in the event of a major public health emergency.

During the pilot, selected HHS health information can be accessed through WebMD Health (http://hhs.webmd.com) and WebMD's partner health sites, including MSN Health and AOL Health. The first topic is physical activity; future topics will include nutrition, preventive screening, and diabetes.

NIH Clinical Alerts and Advisories: NIH Asks Participants in Women’s Health Initiative Estrogen-Alone Study to Stop Study Pills, Begin Follow-up Phase
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/databases/alerts/clinical_alerts.html

"Letters have been sent to all participants in the estrogen-alone study, 11,000 healthy postmenopausal women who have had a hysterectomy, informing them of a recent NIH review of the study data. After careful consideration of the data, NIH has concluded that with an average of nearly 7 years of follow-up completed, estrogen alone does not appear to affect (either increase or decrease) heart disease, a key question of the study. At the same time, estrogen alone appears to increase the risk of stroke and decrease the risk of hip fracture. It has not increased the risk of breast cancer during the time period of the study."

Sexual Health Services in the UK

Here are some good sites from the UK that deal with this topic posted by Dr.P.Badrinath. Badrinath always posts very useful content.

Public Health grand rounds in sexual health – from Manchester http://www.phgr.man.ac.uk/GrandRounds/2003_06/summary.htm

Good Practice Statements for Prevention and Treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infections from Scotland

PDF document.

Leeds Sexual Health.com
http://www.leedssexualhealth.com

A wonderful resource from Leeds on delivering sexual health content. View documents on national and local strategies and on HIV/AIDS and STD prevention.

Ethnicity Online
http://www.ethnicityonline.net/default.htm

The site is intended to help practitioners "understand how ethnic differences affect the perception of illness, the intimate personal interactions necessary for clinical practice and the delivery of healthcare." Describes ethnicity among several ethic groups, gives good practice guidelines, video interviews and information and resources. Sample pages are listed below:

Good practice guideline specific to religious groups from ethnicity on line (might be relevant in a multi ethnic community like Walsall)

Index-Catalog of the Surgeon General online (National Library of Medicine)
http://www.indexcat.nlm.nih.gov

At the recent meeting of the American Association of the History of
Medicine, NLM unveiled the electronic versions of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th series of the Index Catalog.  The site makes available the book and journal indexes covering the years 1896 through 1955. This is a pilot release of NLM's IndexCat search system.

The first series which covers medicine from antiquity to 1896 (the largest series) will be available in about a year as will the 5th. Get access to Dirline which is also linked from this URL.

Smokefree Ordinance Lists (American Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation)
http://www.no-smoke.org/lists.html

Ever wonder which areas of the USA are smoke free? Now you can tell by visiting this Web site that contains" lists of U.S municipalities and states with 100% smokefree laws." Lists are updated quarterly.

As of April 2004, 25 states now have a 100% smokefree air law at either the state or local level.

Locate data on topics such as the number of people in the U.S. protected by smoke-free laws, smokefree ads, and smoking law status in major U.S. travel destinations. Get hot documents and youth smoking prevention documents.

Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH)
http://www.path.org/

I must confess a small part in my heart goes out to agencies that promote appropriate technology. PATH is one of them. PATH is a nonprofit organization "committed to three goals: improving women's health, improving children's health, and preventing communicable diseases," especially in developing countries.

On its Web site you will find descriptions of the programs it administers; technologies it has developed, adapted, or advanced; and resources and publications on various healthcare subjects such as diagnostic technologies, reporductive and perinatal health technologies, and immunization and nutrition technologies. The site is searchable.

American Indian Environmental Office (AIEO)
http://www.epa.gov/indian/

This Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) "coordinates the
Agency-wide effort to strengthen public health and environmental
protection in Indian Country, with a special emphasis on building
Tribal capacity to administer their own environmental programs."

On the AIEO site visitors will find Tribal regions, grants, contacts, governing laws and regulations, and policies and initiatives. Of particular interest to public health practitioners is the data, info and resources page which links you to state and Tribal water quality standards and to other databases. AIEO documents, a calendar of training programs, education and training, and links to related information.

Challenges and Tradeoffs in Low-Income Family Budgets: Implications for Health Coverage - Report [PDF]
http://www.kff.org/medicaid/4147.cfm

I can always count on the Kaiser Family Foundation to bring important issues to my attention.

"This report explores the experiences of families trying to make ends meet on limited budgets. By discussing these families’ work, spending patterns, financial challenges, priorities and tradeoffs and health care and coverage, this report intends to provide a deeper understanding of families’ financial pressures and choices and information to assess the impact of current and proposed policies."
