We perform patient-oriented research in immunocompromised patients. Laboratory studies focus on the interaction of cytomegalovirus (CMV) and the immune system in hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HCT) recipients and HIV-infected individuals. We also study the genetic basis of infectious diseases in HCT recipients using both candidate gene and genome-wide association approaches. Respiratory virus studies focus on RSV, parainfluenzaviruses, influenzaviruses, human metapneumoniavirus, and recently discovered pathogens (e.g., novel polyomavirus, human bocavirus) and their relationship to airflow obstruction. Clinical studies in HCT recipients are aimed at the prevention of CMV disease and viral diseases, as well as the epidemiology, prevention, and treatment of respiratory virus infections. In immunocompetent patients, we study the impact of CMV in patients’ infection-associated acute lung injury.
