Optimal Design of Composite Structures - Overview
Zelda Zabinsky, professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering, and Mark Tuttle, professor of Mechanical Engineering, led a UW research group in the Optimal Design of Composite Structures (ODCS) for over 10 years. The research was funded, in part, by Boeing, NASA, and NSF. This research effort resulted in a collaborative optimization tool for large composite panel design with the application to aircraft primary structures. The tool is known as COSTADE, which stands for Composite Optimization Software for Transport Aircraft Design Evaluation. It combines classical lamination theory, global optimization algorithms, and internal Finite Element Analysis (FEA) module for load redistribution.
