PhD Application Procedure

Thank you for your interest in applying to the Industrial & Systems Engineering graduate program. ISE's day program is intended for full-time, on-campus students.  If you are a working professional or interested in attending graduate school part-time, you must apply to ISE's Professional Masters Program. 

Application Deadlines
International Applicant Deadline: January 1
Due to significantly longer periods of time required for processing and subsequent immigration paperwork, international applicants are not allowed to apply past the January 1 deadline.
Priority Deadline: January 1
For domestic students who want to be considered for admission with funding. 
Final Deadline: July 1
For domestic students who want to be considered for admission without funding
Application Process
The application process is two-step, with some documentation going to the Graduate Admissions Office and some going to the ISE Department.  If you are applying as a graduate-nonmatriculated (GNM) student, please see the GNM page.

The following items must be submitted to the Graduate School:

  1. Online Graduate School Application and payment of application fee.
  2. Transcripts from each college and university attended must be uploaded to the Online Graduate School Application.
  3. Three letters of recommendation (submitted electronically via request through the on-line application).
  4. GRE scores will be submitted electronically (the UW Institution Code, for reporting purposes, is: 4854).
  5. If you are admitted, you will be required to submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. 
  6. International Students & Non-Native English Speakers Only: Submit scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or an equivalent exam approved by the Graduate School.  Proof of English language proficiency is required even if you hold a master's degree from a university in the U.S. or other English-speaking country.   For more information, contact the University’s Office of Educational Assessment or the Educational Testing Service.
  7. International Students Only: Submit Financial Ability Form if you are offered admission.
