October 1, 2007 - I3M Research in Knowledge and Process Management
An I3M research report, "Elements of Innovative Cultures" appears in the October 2007 issue Knowledge and Process Management. Organizational culture is an important determinant of sustained innovation and financial performance. Though it is easy to appreciate the important role culture plays in making innovation successful, it is difficult to change culture. One way of changing culture is to identify innovative elements and use elements relevant to a given organization. The paper identifies eight elements of organizational innovative culture: innovative mission and vision statements, democratic communication, safe spaces, flexibility, collaboration, boundary spanning, incentives, and leadership. Assimilating these elements into organizational culture will enable organizations to support and sustain innovative activities.
