I3M conducts action-oriented research investigations in three zones (1) management of information, (2) deployment of technology to meet information management challenges, and (3) management of how people use information and technology to attain organizational objectives. Below are a few illustrative research topics for each zone:
Management of information: Research that examines issues surrounding development of the semantic web, advances in knowledge organization, provision of information services in a business context, information retrieval, knowledge discovery from databases, business intelligence, information assurance and security, and archival of information repositories.
Deployment of technology: Research that examines technology diffusion, social aspects of technology usage, open source software development, Web 2.0, agile programming methods, design of pervasive and ubiquitous computing, web services, and mobile technologies.
People issues: Research that examines change management programs, knowledge management, strategic innovation, ethical dilemmas faced by information professionals, organizational learning, project management, succession planning, knowledge retention, and global and culturally diverse workforces.
Of specific interest to I3M is research contributes to two or more zones, and ideally to all three zones. Illustrative problems include research into:
- Managing information and information workers in dynamic work contexts using mobile technologies
- Managing information in outsourcing relationships: protecting intellectual property
- Managing knowledge in distributed projects: the role of mobile technologies
- Developing customer-centric information services: understanding motivations and incentives
- Critical success factors for information protection: the information, technology, and human dimensions
