I3M supports research initiatives though a standard funding model. Support is provided for awards to individual researchers for projects that are of interest to all partners. The maximum amount of funding for projects of this type is $20,000 (for one month of summer salary and one quarter of graduate student support). Support is also offered at:
- $15,000 (one month of summer salary and travel support or two quarters of graduate assistant support)
- $10,000 (One quarter of graduate student support and travel support for presentation of research findings)
- $5,000 (travel and research support)
- $2,500 (travel support)
The Institute undertakes research projects shaped by the interests of the research partners (those contributing at a level of $25,000 and above on an annual basis) and the expertise of I3M faculty associates. Basic criteria for evaluating suitability of research projects include, but are not limited to:
- Fit with I3M mission
- Time frame for completion (annual cycles favored to fit member financial commitments)
- Ease of access to research subjects and data
- Immediacy of value to research partners
- Topicality - high visibility is desirable
- Utility to iSchool research agenda and faculty interests
- Transferability of findings to other organizations
- Cost/value proposition
Partners meet on a regular basis (once or twice a year) to discuss potential projects and come to consensus on themes to be investigated. One or more I3M faculty takes primary responsibility for shaping a research proposal with the assistance of interested partners, and submits it to the partners for review and approval prior to the start of the project. Budget and schedule are managed by I3M, with full visibility to the partners.
The number of research projects is determined by funds available through partner memberships, additional outside funding obtained by iSchool faculty or I3M partners, and scope of projects.
Results of research projects are made publicly available through the annual I3M symposium and publication in peer-reviewed and professional journals, as well as internal member publications. Joint authorship between partner institutions and iSchool faculty is encouraged. Author’s and publishers rights will be respected in republication, but multiple articles are encouraged from research data sets. Where necessary, an embargo period may be imposed by mutual consent of partner institutions and the iSchool.
Publication of results will not contain information that identifies partners without their consent. Partners who are participating in a research project have the right to screen any public display or publication to assure that such identifying information has been removed.
Since the mission of I3M is to make the results of the research conducted as widely available as possible, restrictions that will compromise the value of the studies will be avoided whenever possible.
I3M makes available to partners an annual collection of writings from the research projects. The goal of this compendium is to showcase the work of the Institute and provide the partners with easy access to research findings.
