How to Use the Facility
Whom to call
Michele Black is the director of the facility. To schedule time on an
instrument, use the on-line calendar. For
consultation on experimental design or interpretation of results, or for
training to use any of the instruments in the facility, you can call Michele
Black at 685-3014 or email her at mblack2@u.washington.edu
, or call David Bell at 543-7006, email belld@u.washington.edu.
Hours
Sorting may be scheduled between 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. (extended time
available for trained after-hours users) Monday through Friday or by special
arrangement with the operators. The facility also has multiple analyzers that can be used at any time. All
users MUST be trained to operate these instruments and those who need
access to the facility in off hours can make special arrangements. For
information, please call the facility at 543-7006. See instrumentation for descriptions of what cytometers are available.
How to schedule time
Use of the facility is by appointment. To schedule time, go to Scheduling
to use the on-line calendar or come by room H581C, Health Sciences Center.
Please provide the following information when booking your time:
1. Your name, UWID (e-mail name) phone number. and current Specify the
date, time and instrument needed ( this can be done using the on-line
calendar)
2. Provide information in the pop-up window on the calendar if sorting
or you need assistance from the staff; analysis (3 color, cell cycle analysis,
Ca++ etc.); sorting (sterile, non-sterile, cloning, etc.)
3. For sorting and the LSR, include the Fluorochrome(s) used; FITC, PE,
Propidium Iodide, APC, DAPI, etc.
4. Material: source (human, non-human primate, dog, etc.); type (PBL,
fibroblasts, chromosomes, spheroids, etc.). Is the material fixed? Be
prepared to fill out a deceleration of sample origin stating that the
samples are free from human infectious agents.
Note: Potentially infectious material is not permitted in the facility.
Prohibited material includes samples that contain live bacteria, viruses,
fungi, or protozoa that are or may be pathogenic for humans. In addition,
all human tissues of uncertain pathogenic potential are prohibited. If
you're unsure, just ask.
The day of experiment:
1. Please try to be on time, if you are going to be late (15 min or more)
contact the facility.
2. If you need to cancel, try to do so at least one day in advance to
avoid any charges for time (for the analyzers, you can cancel time through
the on-line calendar. You need to contact the staff by e-mail or phone
for the sorter). If this is not possible please notify the facility ASAP
to allow others use of the time. Note: see Policies for detailed information
on cancellations.

information with you to enter in the billing computer; a budget number

be obtained from the facility once you have been given an overview of
how to use the facility and operate the cytometer. You may do this before
your scheduled time by contacting the facility staff.
At the start of the time scheduled, we will provide the instrument(s)
fully aligned, calibrated, and configured for the application(s) you have
requested. If there are any changes in your experiment that require different
instrument setups, please call in advance. (For example, if you have a
sort scheduled using FITC, PE, and Cy-chrome and you need to change the
third color from Cy-chrome to APC, you will save time and money by calling
to change the setup.) Please sign up only for as much time as you need
(your colleagues will thank you.).
If you cancel less than 24 hours prior to your scheduled sort, you will
still be billed for 1 hour of setup time. If you fail to show up for a
scheduled sort, you will be billed for the full time. If you are late
for a scheduled sort or if your sort runs longer than the allotted time,
your sort may be terminated to accommodate those signed up after you.
See Policies for more information.
