Our laboratory is interested in the role of resident lung stem cells in the response of the lung to injury. We have isolated several lines of adult lung stem cells that display stem cell properties, and we are investigating their ability to modulate lung inflammatory responses in vivo and in vitro. We are particularly interested in the interactions of resident lung stem cells with the alveolar myeloid and epithelial cell populations, both under resting condition and after exposure to a variety of challenges. Ultimately we want to determine whether therapeutic strategies involving lung resident stem cells could be useful for the treatment of acute lung injury and repair.
