COMMENT FROM WEB PAGE WITH DR. DUNLAP ’S REPLY FOLLOWING (IN CAPS):

Your article provides a nice overview and the model is quite helpful in understanding where one might want to "pitch" interventions in various types of programs. Do you have any information about programs that attempt to combine parent and child-focused interventions simultaneously? Do you know of any programs that take this dual approach? What kind of evaluation strategies do you recommend to assess efficacy? 1/26/2006

RESPONSE:  THESE ARE CERTAINLY GOOD QUESTIONS, BUT ALSO HARD TO ANSWER IN A CONCISE EMAIL RESPONSE.  FIRST, I THINK THERE ARE MANY PROGRAMS THAT COMBINE "PARENT AND CHILD-FOCUSED INTERVENTIONS SIMULTANEOUSLY" BECAUSE THOSE PROGRAMS THAT ARE DESCRIBED AS "FAMILY-CENTERED" ALMOST ALWAYS ARE FOCUSED ON THE NEEDS OF THE CHILD.  THEY JUST ATTEMPT TO DO SO EXPLICITLY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE FAMILY AND IN THE CONTEXT OF THE FAMILY SYSTEM --- BUT THIS DOES NOT MEAN THE FOCUS IS LESS ON THE CHILD THAN ANY OTHER PROGRAM.  EXAMPLES OF SUCH PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED IN THE BOOK, "FAMILIES AND POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT," EDITED BY LUCYSHYN, DUNLAP AND ALBIN, AND PUBLISHED BY PAUL H. BROOKES (BALTIMORE) IN 2002.  MANY OTHER SOURCES EXIST FOR IDENTIFYING FAMILY-CENTERED PROGRAMS OF EARLY INTERVENTION.  AS FOR EVALUATION STRATEGIES, THE BEST QUICK SUGGESTION I CAN OFFER IS TO LOOK AT SOME OF THE TRAINING MATERIALS (INCLUDING LINKS TO MODULES) AVAILABLE ON (OR THROUGH) THE WEB SITE, www.challengingbehavior.org.  THESE MATERIALS SHOULD HELP ADDRESS THE FIRST QUESTION AS WELL.  I BELIEVE THEY WILL BE OF INTEREST AND VALUE.
