IYC Articles - CommentsReaders' comments on Keith W. Whinnery and Stacie B. Whinnery's "MOVE: Systematic Programming for Early Motor Intervention"Dear ISEI Members, With regard to the Infants and Young Children Articles and Comments Page on the ISEI Website, a question for the Whinnery & Whinnery article entitled “MOVE: Systematic Programming for Early Motor Intervention” and the Whinnery’s response (in CAPS) can be found below. Best regards Mike Guralnick COMMENT FROM WEB PAGE WITH DR. DUNLAP ’S REPLY FOLLOWING (IN CAPS): QUESTION: Is there any significance to the fact that the studies of effectiveness of MOVE have largely been with children with both a physical and intellectual disability? Are there any indications that the approach is more applicable to this population than to children with a “simple” physical disability? (4/24/2007) RESPONSE: THE MOVE PROGRAM HAS BEEN USED WITH YOUNG CHILDREN, OLDER CHILDREN, AND NOW ADULTS WITH A WIDE RANGE OF PHYSICAL DISABILITIES. THIS INCLUDES CHILDREN WITH SEVERE/PROFOUND MULTIPLE DISABILITIES AND CHILDREN WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES BUT NORMAL COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT. WE CONDUCTED A CASE STUDY OF A 3 - 4 YEAR OLD GIRL WITH CP BUT NORMAL COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT. THIS STUDY AND THE PARENT INTERVIEW APPEARED IN TEACHING EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN (2002), 34:3, 44-50. OUR RESEARCH FOCUS SO FAR HAS BEEN WITH YOUNG CHILDREN WITH MULTIPLE DISABILITIES BECAUSE WE BELIEVE THERE IS A GREAT NEED FOR SYSTEMATIC INTERVENTION WITH THESE INDIVIDUALS AND BECAUSE THIS IS OUR BACKGROUND AS EDUCATORS. HOWEVER, MORE RESEARCH IS NEEDED IN ALL AREAS INCLUDING THOSE WITH PHYSICAL BUT NOT COGNITIVE DISABILITIES. OUR EXPERIENCE IN WORKING WITH MANY SITES USING THE MOVE PROGRAM IS THAT IT IS EFFECTIVE WITH ALL RANGES OF COGNITIVE ABILITIES. Back to IYC Articles - Previously published in association with ISEI |
